Pirates to go big in the transfer market?

After a relatively quiet January transfer window, Orlando Pirates could be gearing up for a significant spending spree ahead of the 2025/26 season, the Siya crew has learnt.

Pirates to go big in the transfer market?

The Buccaneers, who last won the league title in the 2011/12 campaign, are eager to bolster their squad as head coach Jose Riveiro intensifies his pursuit of the elusive Betway Premiership crown. With the team competing in multiple competitions and planning to continue doing so for seasons to come, in pursuit of glory in the CAF Champions League among other goals, the need for reinforcements has never been greater.

What the Siya crew has been told...

Orlando Pirates could be gearing up for a big spending spree ahead of the 2025/26 season as part of the plans to continue building a strong team to compete in the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League.

In the recent transfer window in January, Pirates chose not to sign players but instead selected a few who didn’t form part of the plans for the second half of the season.

Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has been consistent in saying that the 37-man squad he has been working with in training is enough and capable of doing the job.

However, indications from sources close to the Soweto giants are that work is in progress for the club to revitalise the squad at the end of the season, with no less than 10 players being targeted.

“There will be changes, and you can expect the club to go big in the transfer window. The club is planning to strengthen all the positions for a competitive squad to challenge for the League and Champions League for seasons to come,” said a source.

Since taking charge of Pirates in 2022, Riveiro has secured five trophies, solidifying his reputation as a successful cup competition manager.

However, the league title has remained elusive, with the Spanish tactician finishing in second place to Mamelodi Sundowns in both of his seasons at the helm.

Every meeting was a war

SAFA National Vice President Bennett Bailey was elected unopposed for a third term as SAFA Cape Town President at the Regional Conference held recently at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Bailey, who has been at the helm of Cape Town football since 2018, will lead the region for the next four years, supported by his Vice Presidents, Andrew Bothman, Nomonde Ndyoko and Linda Pistoli, among other executive members. The buildup to this year’s Regional Conference was far from smooth, as there were disputes and even an urgent court application along the way. In this interview with Soccer Laduma’s Mzoxolo Budaza, Bailey reflects on how far SAFA Cape Town has come under his leadership and discusses the organisation’s plans going forward.

Can Bafana fans afford World Cup tickets?

South Africa is going to the FIFA World Cup 2026, and for 16 lucky fans, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture is footing the bill. Minister Gayton McKenzie’s ‘Mzansi to the World Cup’ competition captured the imagination of thousands, producing 20 proud ambassadors who will stand inside Estadio Azteca when Bafana Bafana kick off against Mexico on 11 June. It is a beautiful story. But behind the feel-good headlines lies a harsher truth: for the overwhelming majority of South African football fans, the 2026 World Cup is financially out of reach. Ticket prices that would swallow eight months of minimum-wage income, flights across 14 000 kilometres, visas, hotels and daily living costs all combine to tell the story of a nation that qualified for the greatest show on earth but can barely afford a seat in the stadium.
