As kick off neared, hundreds of armed riot police with shields and barriers were seen using pepper spray and tear gas on supporters, including children and families.
The match had been delayed by 36 minutes after huge queues of Liverpool fans formed outside unable to get in hours before the intended 8pm start.
As a major bottleneck built up, French police vans blocked off a ramp leading to the stadium to try and slow the flow of fans to ticket and bag checks.
Supporter Carl Noades, 63, said: "There only seems to be one gate open. It's ridiculous. The game's kicked off and we're stuck outside.
"The way they're treating us is shocking."
