LUKE SHAW has admitted he faces a fight to be fit for England’s opening game of the Euros – after Gareth Southgate decided he had to take a chance on the Manchester United defender.
Shaw has been sidelined for four months by a hamstring injury, made worse by his desperation to try to be fit in time for United’s FA Cup Final victory over Manchester City last month.
The 28-year-old still isn’t back in full training – and insists he’s unwilling to take any more chances with his health after suffering a string of set-backs.
But Southgate is so short of left-backs that he felt compelled to take Shaw to Germany – even if he might not be available for the early matches.
Shaw, who reported for duty early in a bid to prove he was on the road to recovery, said: “Of course, I would love to make the first game, I can’t lie.
“But it’s not really down to me. At the moment we just go day by day, see how I react, see how I’m feeling in training.
