North East mayor rails against train firm

NORTHERN train services in the North East are "not good enough" and must be improved, the region's mayor has warned.
Kim McGuinness issued a rebuke to the rail operator this week, after figures showed a higher rate of train cancellations at stations in our region compared to other major cities earlier this year.
The Labour politician has said previously that she and other elected mayors could seek to take control over heavily-criticised Northern Trains franchise, which is owned by the Department for Transport's Operator of Last Resort after being nationalised in 2020.
As plans for more than £200 million of transport upgrades to infrastructure around the North East were approved on Tuesday afternoon, Ms McGuinness took aim at Northern once again.
She told a North East Combined Authority meeting in Sunderland: "I have been really disappointed to see the latest rail station performance statistics and the North East being let down again by Northern rail.
