SIKKIM FLOOD: TOLL RISES TO 25, SEARCH & EVACUATION UNDER WAY

Officials said that 25 bodies, including seven army members, had been pulled from the mud and rubble of the flash flood that rushed across Sikkim’s Teesta river by Army and NDRF personnel working on foot and in boats. A significant number of persons went missing as a result of the flood that was caused by a cloudburst early on Wednesday. Officials reported that even though 2,413 individuals have been saved and are staying in shelters, 143 are still missing.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who died in the flash flood in the state. He also declared an immediate relief of Rs 2,000 each to all those who are being sheltered in relief camps.
