MAKHOBA: A FRESH FACE FOR AFRO-SOUL BAND
Bonginkosi Tiwana
Freshlyground's new frontwoman

» Decision to fill Zolani Mahola's big shoes 'felt right'.

Replacing the lead singer of a band that has been with the ensemble for nearly 20 years is no child's play. But at 19 years of age Mbali Makhoba has accepted the role of being the frontwoman of Freshlyground.

"Taking on this role required some serious thought," Makhoba tells Saturday Citizen. "I mean, we're talking about Zolani and Freshlyground! Those are some incredible shoes to fill."

Makhoba said after working with the band and seeing how well they connected musically she felt confident in her decision.

"It just felt right, you know?" Zolani Mahola, the unassuming artist with moving vocals, decided to leave Freshlyground after 17 years in 2019.

Her departure from the group was not an easy one, as she was an integral part of Freshlyground's fundamental and distinctive characteristics – an authentic Afrocentric soul that's universally appealing.

As any relationship guru will tell you that you need to heal from a previous relationship before stepping into a new one and this is the route the group took before roping in Makhoba.
