As the department of water and sanitation investigates last month's fish mortality incidents at Nandoni Dam and the Luvuvhu River near Tshitomboni in Limpopo’s Thulamela local municipality, experts yesterday cautioned of high E.coli bacteria levels polluting the country’s waters.
Department spokesperson Mandla Mathebula confirmed it had received reports of dead fish in December and promptly collected water samples from the affected sites in Nandoni and Luvuvhu.
According to Mathebula, fish and water samples from Nandoni and Luvuvhu were taken and analysed at two accredited laboratories, Muratho Laboratory and Capricorn Veterinary Laboratory.
Preliminary results showed that all water quality parameters - including dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand - were “within acceptable limits as per prescribed standards”.
Preliminary results indicated “no significant water quality deviations to explain the fish mortality”.
