The Union Cabinet has approved the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative, which aims to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, including urban body and panchayat polls within 100 days. This decision follows a report from a panel led by ex-President Ram Nath Kovind, recommending unified elections. Here we decode the whole concept of One Nation, One Election.

Elections in India incur significant costs in terms of finances and resources. Currently, voting happens annually in different regions, causing repeated disturbances. Historically, simultaneous elections were common until 1967 but were disrupted due to premature dissolutions and other factors. The Election Commission first proposed the idea in 1983, followed by endorsements in 1999 and 2018.
