[1] According to the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study, COPD affects more than 212 million people globally, [2] with 55 million cases in India, where it is the second leading cause of death. [3]
While inhalation therapy is vital for managing COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) stands out as an underutilized but highly effective addition to alleviating the day-to-day impact of the disease. [4] Therefore, in addition to the focus on 'Know Your Lung Function' this World COPD Day, it's important for those living with the disease to be aware of the variety of tools and approaches available that can support both their lung health and overall quality of life.
What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a supervised program involving trained physiotherapists that is designed to help people with lung diseases, such as COPD, breathe and live better. It combines patient education, exercise, and lifestyle changes into a comprehensive plan aimed at improving lung function and quality of life. Typically lasting 6 to 8 weeks, pulmonary rehabilitation teaches exercises and breathing techniques that can reduce breathlessness, increase physical activity, and thus improve psychological well-being. This multidisciplinary approach not only enhances quality of life but also reduces the need for hospital visits and long-term healthcare costs.
