Driven by a passion for acting and directing, he gave up formal education to join his father's theater group to learn the ropes.
He had to start at the bottom and earn his way up to play the lead in a play directed and produced by his father, Prithviraj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor often credited his days at the theater where he handled props, music, makeup, and just about everything for having developed an eye for detail.
