The audit revealed that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Andheri last year may have issued as many as 76,000 licences on the basis of bogus driving tests conducted using unauthorised two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
The matter came to light after the Accountant General's team inspected records, following a tip-off by social activist Binu Varghese.
A scan of the Sarathi dashboard of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which facilitates application for licences, brought the scam to light. Of the 1.04 lakh licences that were checked, 76,354 of those issued in 202324 turned out to be bogus as their driving tests were conducted on four 'invalid vehicles' two-wheelers and cars. These vehicles were used to conduct driving tests on several kinds of vehicles, including buses, tractors, and cranes.
