Barring few sects, majority to mark Eid-ul-Fitr today

Mumbai and most regions of the country will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr today (Thursday) to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. However, some places in the extreme north and south, like Kashmir, Kargil and Kerala, celebrated the festival on Wednesday. According to the clerics, the difference in the dates is because of two reasons. Primarily, the last call depends on the moon sighting and secondly, there is no standard rule regarding the observance of Eid on a common day. This year, there were reports that the sighting of the moon will be affected by the total solar eclipse.
