The BEST Kamgar Sena, one the workers' union of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), has announced a symbolic protest to oppose privatisation of the public transport provider and the challenges it faces.The protest, scheduled for today (Thursday), calls upon employees, officials, and the general public to wear black ribbons as a sign of solidarity.The union has asserted that saving BEST is not just an issue for the transport body's workers but also a matter of public interest, as it serves millions daily. Its key demands include stopping privatisation, besides putting a stop to reliance on private contractors (wet lease) for operations.The union is also demanding permanent recruitment and stable employment to address staff shortage, immediate disbursement of gratuity for retired employees, and settlement of delayed allowances promised during the Covid pandemic.Union leader Suhas Sawant said that privatisation threatens BEST's accessibility and affordability."We urge Mumbaikars to join hands with us to safeguard this essential public service and the rights of its workers," he said.
