Senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, met at the residence of party president JP Nadda on Thursday to discuss the demands raised by the alliance partners regarding allotment of ministerial berths and portfolios ahead of the prime minister’s swearing-in ceremony, possibly on May 9.
With the BJP winning only 240 LS seats, the role of all the 14 other NDA constituents, which had among them won 53 Lok Sabha seats, has assumed importance in determining the contours of the next government and its stability. Most of these parties had presented the BJP with their list of demands regarding the number of ministerial berths and the portfolios which they would like to have.
The BJP, however, is not keen on relinquishing any of the important infrastructure or strategically important portfolios to its partners - in particular Home, External Affairs, Defence, Finance, Railways and Road Transport and Highways.
