He is accused of stealing and illegally exporting 7.23 lakh tonnes of iron ore causing an estimated loss of ₹250 crore to the exchequer.The case, aka Belekeri illegal mining case, is related to stealing of seized iron ore and exporting it from Belekeri port near Ankola in Karwar district in the Western Coast in 2009. Of the seized ore of 8.5 lakh tonnes of iron, ore estimated to be ₹350 crore, Sail's company is said to have exported 7.23 lakh tonnes.Besides Sail, forest officer Mahesh Biliya and Kharad Pudi Mahesh of the Lakshmi Venkateshwara Minerals.The Supreme Court had ordered the CBI following which a case was registered resulting in the conviction and sentencing of the MLA and others.The CBI arrested Sail and others on Friday soon after convicting them. On Saturday, when the judge sentenced the jail term, Sail requested for just three years punishment but Judge Bhat denied it.
