Britannia India Limited's sudden decision to down the shutters of its 75-year-old factory in Taratala, took many by surprise.

How Did Britannia Cookie Crumble?

Even as the factory had announced its decision to close, political slugfest has started with the BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya saying, "The Britannia factory, once a beacon of industrial vitality in Bengal, suffered significant during the Left regime due to the CPI-M's pervasive unionbaji. Subsequently, TMC's relentless tolabaji was the final nail in the coffin." attrition Malviya added the decision will lead to unemployment.

CPI-M leader Gautam Roy said work in the factory was suspended for over two weeks and employees agreed to take VRS.

Taking to X, political analyst Kanchan Gupta said, "I guess it was inevitable. In its mandatory filing at the NSE, Britannia has said employees have accepted a 'voluntary retirement scheme' and shutting of the factory would not have any material impact on the business operations of the company. It means Britannia will maintain its earnings minus its operations in Kolkata."
