JD(U) flags off 'Karpoori Rath' to woo EBCs
The Free Press Journal|December 23, 2024
With an objective to broaden its support base among Extremely Backward Castes (EBCs), which constitute 36.01 per cent of Bihar's population, JD(U) executive president and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Jha on Sunday flagged off 'Karpoori Rath' from the state party office.
Dheeraj Kumar

Although EBCs are considered mainly supporters of chief minister Nitish Kumar, other parties are also trying to woo them. Nitish carved the EBCs out of the Mandal block and took various initiatives for their empowerment, first offering the EBCs a stake in local governance, with 20 per cent quota in seats in three-tier local bodies, district boards, panchayat samitis and gram panchayats, in January 2006. He also started offering financial assistance to meritorious EBC youths interested in civil services or starting their own businesses.
