A tight contest appears on the cards in the July 12 biennial elections for 11 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council after the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Tuesday fielded Milind Narvekar, a close aide of party chief Uddhav Thackeray, taking the number of candidates in the fray to 14.
Uddhav's move to suddenly ask Narvekar to file his nomination for the MLC contest surprised many. NCP chief Sharad Pawar supported Peasants & Workers Party (PWP) leader Jayant Patil from his party quota. Uddhav's move exposed the differences within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over candidature in the MLC polls.
Sources close to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief said that the chances of Milind Narvekar withdrawing from the contest seem slim. In case that happens the election can still go unopposed.
