The court has given the MPCB three weeks to report on the nature of pollution, specifically the discharge of chemical effluents into the Kasardi River by approximately 900 factories in the MIDC belt.The order came response to the petition filed by activist Arvind Mhatre regarding the rampant pollution of the Kasadi river.According to the petition, the pollution is caused due to discharge of untreated industrial effluents from the industrial factories. The court has requested details on the measures being taken to address the pollution and a report on the operation of the effluent treatment plant in the area.Mhatre had approached the Supreme Court in February last year, following a National Green Tribunal (NGT) suggestion after filing a case in 2017. He stated that the NGT's directives were ignored, prompting the SC appeal.A study by revealed severe ecological damage to the river, including animal deaths, fish destruction, and mangrove loss.Residents have suffered from respiratory issues and allergies for over a decade.
