Unconstitutional & divisive: Opposition

The Opposition parties on Thursday termed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was introduced by Minorities Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, as a "draconian law and a fundamental attack on the Constitution".

After Rijiju tabled the Bill in the Lok Sabha, the Speaker allowed the members to speak on it. Congress general secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal accused the Centre of playing "divisive politics" through the legislation. He said, "It is your motive to divide the country". He termed the amendment bill "unconstitutional" and demanded that it should not be allowed.

"This Bill is a fundamental attack on the Constitution. Through it they are inserting a provision that non-Muslims should also be members of the Waqf governing council. It is a direct attack on freedom of religion. Next you will go for Christians, then Jains. People of India will not buy this kind of divisive politics now," he said.
