'Black Fraud Day' warning as victims lose £700 each to online scams

Black Friday is fast becoming Black Fraud Day with the annual discount frenzy now "prime time" for scammers, according to the UK's cybersecurity chief, who said criminals are now using artificial intelligence to trick shoppers.

With online criminals taking advantage of an eagerness to save money amid the cost of living crisis, last Christmas Britons were scammed out of more than £11.5m, new figures show. This compares to £10.6m in 2022, with fake clothing or high-end tech listings on social media among the ploys used to dupe shoppers.
