Potter had been in his post for just over six months but has lost his job after failing to settle at Stamford Bridge.

The former Brighton manager was appointed after Chelsea's owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, fired Thomas Tuchel last September. Potter has found it difficult to make the step up and, although the hierarchy were desperate for their gamble on him to pay off, the decision was made after the club lost 2-0 at home against Aston Villa on Saturday. Bruno Saltor is interim head coach.

Starmer Must Pick Up the Pieces After Macron Fails to Pin Down the President

Keir Starmer, when he visits the White House tomorrow, will have to pick up the many loose threads left by another chaotic few days of diplomacy in the US in which America voted with Russia at the UN to protect Vladimir Putin from criticism over the invasion of Ukraine, then saw Trump make assurances that the Russian president was happy for European forces to enter Ukraine - only to be contradicted by Moscow hours later.
