Pierce is seen as the ideal experienced figure with deep knowledge of the Republican party to help guide the Labour government through what may prove to be a perilous transition from Biden to the Trump administration.
Pat McFadden, the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, told Sky News: "At the moment, she is doing an excellent job. She's got the full confidence of the British government, and we want her to keep on doing the job that she's doing.
"And I think she's going to be a very important interlocutor and adviser for the UK government in this period of transition." He added: "I can't say exactly when her term will end ... she'll be there for a while." Pierce has been operating from the US since 2018, first as the UK's envoy to the UN in New York before being appointed as the UK's ambassador to Washington in 2020.
