US authorities have charged a former Indian intelligence officer with allegedly masterminding a murder-for-hire plot against a prominent Sikh separatist in New York City last year.

Ex-spy for India charged with masterminding US murder plot

Late on Thursday, an unsealed indictment named Vikash Yadav as the Indian spy US prosecutors say attempted to orchestrate the assassination of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who is a US citizen.

Pannun, a lawyer and activist, is a leader of the Khalistan movement, banned in India, that is seeking an independent Sikh state in Punjab. Pannun had been designated a terrorist by the Indian government.
