Former Post Office IT chief claims Horizon system was not flawed
The Guardian|October 16, 2024
The former head of IT at the Post Office named by the ex-chief executive Paula Vennells as one of five people responsible for the Horizon scandal has said he still has not seen evidence of a "fundamental flaw" in the IT system.
- Mark Sweney

Mike Young, who worked at the Post Office from 2008 to 2012, when the legacy Horizon was moved to an online system, was giving evidence to the public inquiry into the scandal yesterday, months after it was told "he could not be found" to add him to the witness list.

Young told the hearing: "I did not see anything fundamentally wrong with Horizon or its IT code at the time, other than minor bugs and glitches that would normally be expected in a pilot. Still, to this day, I am unaware of an identified part of Horizon code that someone can point to show that Horizon is fundamentally flawed.

Technofossils' Humanity's geo-legacy will be plastic bags and chicken bones

As an eternal testament to humanity, plastic bags, cheap clothes and chicken bones are not much of a legacy. But two geologists exploring which items from our technological civilisation are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils have reached an ironic but instructive conclusion: fast food and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature.

'It's blackmail' Ukrainians react with anger to Trump's demand for $500bn share of their oil, gas and minerals

Drawing in the snow with his finger, Hrechukha Mykola sketched out how Ukraine's new lithium mine might look. It would have a deep central shaft, with a series of side tunnels, he said. \"The lithium is good everywhere. The biggest concentration is at a depth of 200500 metres,\" he said. \"We should be able to extract 4,300 tonnes a day.
