Soul played Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson in the show between 1975 and 1979 - the sensitive side of a partnership with Paul Michael Glaser's wisecracking Dave Starsky.
Last night his wife Helen Snell wrote: "David Soul - beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother - died after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend.
"His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched." Fame with Starsky & Hutch garnered heart-throb status for the US-born star. He parlayed this into a pop career, with his songs Don't Give Up on Us and Silver Lady reaching the No 1 spot in the UK in 1976 and 1977 respectively.
Born in Chicago in 1943, Soul began performing on stage in the mid 1960s, and was a founding member of the Firehouse Theater in Minneapolis.
