Donald Trump demanded the dropping of all criminal cases against him yesterday as he was crowned the Republican party's nominee for president, pledging to "bring the whole country, even the whole world, together" following the failed attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania.
After an already dramatic weekend for the former president, the criminal case against Trump on charges that he illegally retained classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago club was dismissed yesterday by the judge, Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, in the hours before the Republican national convention (RNC) in Milwaukee was due to begin.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: "As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events on Saturday, this dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts... Let us come together to END all Weaponization of our Justice System, and Make America Great Again!"
The former president, who holds a marginal lead over Joe Biden in polling, last night named the Ohio senator JD Vance, who has aligned himself with the populist right, as his running mate for the White House.
Vance, a venture capitalist who rocketed into the public eye with his 2016 memoir turned Netflix movie Hillbilly Elegy, was once among Trump's conservative critics, but he has become a close ally.
In response to the attempt on Trump's life, Vance wrote on X: "The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination."
