THE Tamar Valley was once a rich source of cherries, apples, pears, which were sent to market by horse and cart to such towns such as Tavistock and Liskeard, Launceston and Callington.
By the end of the 19th century, fruit was being sent to London and Glasgow by train. Thank you, Brunel. But the most important trade was on Tamar barges, down river to the markets of Devonport to replenish the larders of the hard-working, fast-expanding population of Plymouth.
Added to this was the demand from the Naval Dockyard and the King William Yard, which had to victual naval ships going around the world. Some would be away for two years or more.
