ST MELLION VETERANS
Played on the Kernow course, the Fossils did enough to wrestle the trophy away from the ladies with an excellent scoreline of 78½ to 65½, but it has to be added that there were a number of close matches as five were won by the Fossils and three by the Ladies.
Nearest the Pin prizes went to Alec Brannan and Sue Wenmouth.
Tuesday brought not only Dartmouth to St Mellion, but also rain in significant quantities.
Whilst greenkeepers and gardeners may well welcome such rainfall as it fell, the golfers did not! Even though the start was delayed in the hope that the rain would pass, this proved a false hope and by the time the first shots were fired, the rain, after a brief interlude, fell heavily on the participants.
Having salvaged a respectable defeat only a week prior in hot and gruelling circumstances, Tuesday’s conditions were the complete opposite but could the late resurgence continue?
In a word, ‘yes’ but agonisingly, the team just failed to register the half that would have given them possession of the Tamar Cup.
At the end of a soggy day, St Mellion had won 5-3, equalling their defeat at Dartmouth and so, for another year, the Tamar Cup resides in South Devon.
St Mellion’s Pete Mehigan and Dartmouth’s Barrie O Shea took home their respective Nearest the Pin prizes.
On Wednesday, no less than 16 Fossils travelled west to Camelford to take part in the CSGA Summer Meeting.
