AN investigation into allegations made against a parish priest who was set to become the next Bishop of Plymouth has concluded with ‘no canonical action’ to be taken.
In February, it was unexpectedly announced that 54-year-old Canon Christopher Whitehead was stepping back from his intended role as the city’s next Bishop.
In December last year, it was announced that he had been appointed to the post by the Pope. The 54-year-old was set to become the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Plymouth, which also covers the Cornwall, Devon and Dorset areas.
Canon Whitehead was expected to be ordained in the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary and Saint Boniface in Stonehouse last month. He was due to replace the Right Reverend Mark O’Toole, who moved to Wales in June 2022 to become Archbishop of Cardiff and Bishop of Menevia.
