JONEZY PLANS SUMMER PARTIES FOR PLYMOUTH

Celebrity DJ still savours city roots

STARTING his career as a DJ at J.F.K’s and Candy Store, a Plymouth DJ has worked his way up to opening events for Snoop Dogg, having a residency in Ibiza, working with Usher, and recording regular mixes for BBC Radio 1Xtra.

David Jones, alias DJ Jonezy, is now celebrating his 20th year as a DJ, and his five-year-old son is set to follow in his footsteps as he already enjoys joining in with his dad.

Jonezy, 41, whose career has been heavily supported by Charlie Sloth, might travel all over the world for his job but still loves doing sets in his home town, Plymouth. He says he has some amazing summer parties planned in the city this year.

Jonezy explained how he started in the industry in Plymouth: “I got into hip-hop music around the early ’90s, what is now seen as the golden era of hip-hop. I used to go out to club nights and there was nowhere really playing the music we were into. We used to go to a club called J.F.K’s on a Thursday.

“I used to go up to the DJ and ask him for hip hop and R’n’B music, but he kept saying no, there isn’t a scene for it in Plymouth. I asked so much that one week he snapped and said, if I think there’s a crowd for it, there’s a room for you to play it next week.
