A SCHOOL which was set up to help more girls gain acceptance into university is marking its 150th anniversary this year.
Plymouth High School for Girls was established in 1874 by the Devonport branch of the National Union for Education of Women.
Although universities were slowly opening their degrees to women, girls tended to lack the education necessary to study at degree level, so the union worked with local businesses to raise the necessary funds to establish a high school for girls.
Celebrations to mark the school's 150th anniversary will take place throughout 2024, offering an opportunity for current students, including boys studying in the sixth form, alumnae, staff and the local community to come together and reflect on the school's enduring legacy.
