NEARLY four years after council chiefs ordered the removal of two street signs at Sir John Hawkins Square, the plan to rename it "Justice Square" is being held up by yet more legal wrangling.
In June 2020, Cllr Tudor Evans, then and now the city council's leader, told a meeting that the council stood in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and had "started the process of renaming the square among a series of measures to acknowledge the 'terrible side' of the city's history." A few day later, the council's assistant chief executive asked council staff to remove the square's two name signs "because of fears they would either be stolen or vandalised".
