Councillors hit out over elected mayor campaign

PLYMOUTH politicians have again hit out at "a small group of well-funded individuals" behind the campaign for an elected mayor as new details emerged about the petition which triggered a referendum.

Information supplied by Plymouth City Council to a member of the public revealed that the Mayor For Plymouth campaign submitted petitions to the council three times, after failing to reach the required number of signatures during the first two submissions.

Also, there were 5,691 invalid entries, much higher than originally realised and more than a third of all the names submitted. Plymouth's ruling Labour group said the figures showed thousands of people possibly didn't understand what they were signing.

The Conservative group on the council also said they were shocked that campaigners were able to submit three petitions - and called for answers about how petitions are handled.

That followed Germany's unwise decision to implement a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare which resulted in the sinking of US civilian ships and the loss of American lives. If Germany had respected American neutrality, the outcome of the war could have been very different.
