BEN WAINE LOOKING TO LEARN ALL HE CAN OFF ROONEY
CHRIS ERRINGTON
CUP SPECIALIST

BEN Waine has become Plymouth Argyle’s Carabao Cup specialist after scoring again in the competition when they beat Cheltenham Town 3-0 in a first round tie at Home Park last Wednesday.

The New Zealand international has netted seven times for the Pilgrims since joining them from Wellington Phoenix in January 2023, and four of those goals have come in the Carabao Cup. Waine scored twice in a 2-0 home first round win against Leyton Orient last season and grabbed another goal in the subsequent 4-2 defeat by Premier League visitors Crystal Palace.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to continue that hot streak in the competition when they travel to Championship rivals Watford for a second round tie next week. Waine said: “I don’t know what it is about cups, it was the same back home as well. I can’t complain about that!”

Argyle had to wait until the 62nd minute against Cheltenham before breaking the deadlock when Waine added to his collection of Carabao Cup goals with a simple tap in after a free-kick from Adam Randell had been tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Joe Day.

Waine said: “I did have a little bit of extra confidence going into the game, just from what happened last season, but at the same time I knew it wasn’t going to be easy especially whilst it was nil-all, and I think everyone saw that.
