Day off work not guaranteed
The Herald|September 14, 2022
A BANK holiday has been approved by King Charles III for the day of the Queen's funeral but it will be up to your employer to decide if you get the day off work, a Plymouth lawyer has explained.

Day off work not guaranteed

The King confirmed the order at a ceremony in London proclaiming him as monarch, with the Queen's state funeral to be held next Monday.

Steph Marsh, a solicitor in the employment department at Plymouth's Wolferstans Solicitors, explained there is no statutory right to have the day off and employers can decide whether to close or remain open. Retailers, for example, are not required to shut their doors on the day of the funeral, and some may choose to open for reduced hours, as many regularly do on other bank holidays.

Government guidance states: "Some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the state funeral; however, this is at the discretion of individual businesses."
