MARION McMULLEN looks at the many career highlights of The Who's Roger Daltrey as he enters his ninth decade

ROGER DALTREY has rocked the world as the lead singer of The Who.

He had everyone at Wembley Stadium on their feet when the band played at Live Aid, has enjoyed solo success and also carved out an acting career.

But Roger has always been determined to keep his feet firmly on the ground and once said: "I'm a rock god? I'm 5ft 7in. I had me jaw broken and so my chin stuck out.

That's how I became tough. I learned to pick up anything and fight back." Roger even called his autobiography Thanks A Lot Mr Kibblewhite in a nod to his old grammar school teacher who said he would never amount to much.

The singer once recalled: "I was a school rebel. Whatever they said do, I didn't do. I was totally anti-everything. I was a right b*****d, a right hard nut. Rock and roll was the only thing I wanted to get into." Roger Harry Daltrey was born in Hammersmith, London 80 years ago on March 1, 1944. One of his first ventures into music was with a skiffle band called The Detours.

He and fellow bandmates Peter Townshend and the late John Entwistle all went to Acton Grammar School and shared a love of music.
