MORE mystery surrounds the latest installation of Plymouth’s new Bishop with the second cancellation within a year. Auxiliary Bishop Philip Moger of Southwark was due to be installed as the tenth bishop of the diocese last week, but this has now apparently been put on hold.
The Herald reported last December that Canon Christopher Whitehead was to take over the diocese, which covers Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, following his appointment by the Pope. The 54-year-old was to be ordained in the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary and Saint Boniface in Stonehouse.
However, in February this year it was unexpectedly announced that Canon Whitehead was stepping back from his intended role as the city’s next Bishop. At the time the Catholic Church issued a statement, explaining Canon Whitehead had stepped back from “active ministry”.
