DISMANTLING the UK’s redundant nuclear-powered submarines needs to be accelerated, a defence minister has acknowledged.
Labour frontbencher Lord Coaker said the Government was looking to accelerate the disposal process as he was tackled at Westminster over the ageing backlog, with one vessel having left service more than 40 years ago.
He told Parliament there were currently seven decommissioned and defuelled submarines at Rosyth in Scotland and 15 at Devonport in Plymouth, four of which had had their spent fuel removed.
