Renters are facing big problems, report says

RENTERS relying on housing benefit are being hit by the Government’s three-year freeze on Local Housing Allowance rates, according to a major new report by Citizens Advice and the University of Plymouth.

The report, which is titled ‘Sometimes I Sit on the Sofa and Cry’, is based on research conducted with people living in private rented accommodation but reliant on housing allowance in the South Hams, Plymouth and South-East Cornwall.

Average rents in the region have been outstripping rises in Local Housing Allowance (LHA) support since 2015, says the research, but the gap between the two has now grown to 12 percent.

A case study focuses on a 67-year-old pensioner who rents a one-bedroom flat for £475 a month but only receives £200 a month in housing benefit.
