WAYNE Rooney thought Plymouth Argyle moving the ball a lot quicker in the second half made them more of a threat going forward as they beat Cheltenham Town 3-0 in the Carabao Cup first round at Home Park last night.
Rooney got the positive response he wanted from his side following the season-opening 4-0 Championship defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday as the Pilgrims won for the first time under his charge. They will now be away to Watford in round two on the week commencing August 26.
Argyle did not make the breakthrough until the 62nd minute when Ben Waine tapped home after an Adam Randell free-kick had been tapped onto the crossbar by Cheltenham 'keeper Joe Day. There were then further goals from Ryan Hardie and substitute Mustapha Bundu in the closing stages.
"I thought we were good," said Rooney. "First half, I think we had to be a bit more patient with the ball and in our positions because we were rushing it at times and were a little bit sloppy on occasions which could cost us if we don't get that out of our game, but I felt second half we came out with much more control.
