'Secret' tennis club opens up

WHEN they say “Anyone for tennis?” they really mean it. It’s been one of Plymouth’s best kept secrets for years but now Stonehouse’s walled tennis club is opening its courts and gardens for everyone to visit as it looks to widen its membership and appeal.

Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club is taking part in the National Garden Scheme on May 13 and 14, when visitors will be able to take a tour – and even arrive by boat.

The club is encouraging visitors to make a day of it and take the ferry with Plymouth Boat Trips from the Barbican to Royal William Yard and walk the short distance to the courts and gardens. But, of course, visitors can make their way by land, and either way club members want to show off facilities and encourage people to join.

“It used to be exclusive, but now it is inclusive, for everyone,” said club chairman Tom Keene. “If ever there was a time when we needed a place for social cohesion and community, this is it.”

Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club, in Durnford Street, was founded in the 1970s when the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe sold off land that is now the Nazareth House and Edgcumbe Court care facilities. He retained the tennis courts and gardens which were part of the estate on the Plymouth side of the Tamar.
