Son jailed for life after murdering his mother

A SON has been jailed for life for murdering his mother at her home in Plymouth in May last year.

Callum Thomas, 33, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Debra Cantrell, 56, and told he must serve a minimum of 12 years.

The court heard Thomas had threatened to kill his mum on previous occasions and there was a long history of domestic violence between them.

The jury heard the alarm was raised when police were contacted in the early hours of Wednesday 31 May last year by a member of the public from North Carolina, in the USA. This followed a call he received from the defendant on Monday 8 May, 2023.

When a mutual, online gaming friend could not get hold of Thomas later in the month, the caller raised his concerns with police.

Police then atttended Debra’s home in Plymouth at around 9am on Wednesday 31 May, where they found her body in an advanced state of decomposition.
