The poignant service was attended by representatives of veterans’ organisations, as well as military and civic dignitaries from Plymouth, Saltash and Torpoint.
Rev Joe Dent, Chaplain of the Federation Of Plymouth & District ExService Association led the service at the American War Memorial.
Rev Dent said: “We have gathered here in the presence of God on this sixth day of June to commemorate the seaborne invasion of the Normandy coast, Operation Neptune, and the subsequent hard-fought Battle Of Normandy, Operation Overlord, which marked the beginning of the final campaign of World War Two in the West.
