Towards the end of his speech at the Believers Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida, Mr Trump said, "Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore … You got to get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote.”
Many Democrats interpreted the comments as Mr Trump being prepared to put an end to American democracy. California representative Adam Schiff, a Senate candidate in the fall, shared a clip on X of Mr Trump’s comments: “This year democracy is on the ballot, and if we are to save it, we must vote against authoritarianism. Here Trump helpfully reminds us that the alternative is never having the chance to vote again.”
“This. Is. Terrifying. We cannot let this be the case,” Washington Representative and the chair of the progressive caucus Pramila Jayapal said on the platform.
