Having lived, breathed music, she is music to ears
The Morning Standard|October 18, 2024
AT 107, Kunjamma Chakko from Poyyappally, Kollam, still finds joy in what has been the rhythm of her life for nearly a century - singing. From her modest home, the soulful melodies of her voice and the hum of her harmonium still float through the air, much like they have for decades. Her passion for music began when she was just 12 years old, singing Christian devotional hymns in her church choir, and it has sustained her ever since.

Kunjamma's journey with music is not just a story of talent but of perseverance. Born into a Christian family in Chathannur, Kollam, she trained in Carnatic music for eight years, an uncommon pursuit for girls at the time. But with the unwavering support of her family, she embraced her passion. "My uncle arranged for a Bhagavathar (classical music teacher) to come to our house and teach me music. In those days, it wasn't common for girls to learn music, but my family supported me.

Music isn't just about moving your lips. It should be so melodic that it pleases not only the people but even God," Kunjamma told TNIE.
