Hopes for truce as Hamas drops demand that Israel agree upfront to end war
The Morning Standard|July 07, 2024
HAMAS has given initial approval for a US-backed proposal for a phased cease-fire deal in Gaza, dropping a key demand that Israel give an up-front commitment for a complete end to the war, a Hamas and an Egyptian official said on Saturday.

Previous talks have stalled over Hamas' insistence that Israel agree to an end of the war and full withdrawal of its troops from Gaza.

The apparent compromise by the militant group' which controlled Gaza before triggering the war with an October 7 attack on Israel could help deliver the first pause in fighting since November and set the stage for further talks on ending fighting.
