Rain brings tears for onion growers in Gadag

THE onion growers of Gadag are now slowly shifting to commercial crops and are not coming forward to buy onion seeds due to their fear of irregular rains. Abbigeri which is known as a onion hub, growers are turning towards commercial crops for the first time after decades.

Rain brings tears for onion growers in Gadag

The highest number of red onions are grown in Maharashtra and then in Karnataka and major percentage is grown in Gadag.

Farmers from Gadag used to grow onions in 50,000 hectare. However, this time it has reduced to a great extent due to irregular rains for the last three consecutive years. As hundreds of onion growers suffered losses continuously, many of them are now moving towards other crops.
