Anna Varsity rape case: Madras HC initiates suo motu case, awaits CJ's nod
The New Indian Express Hyderabad|December 28, 2024
THE Madras HC on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the recent rape case of a girl student of Anna University inside the campus but deferred hearing the matter as the Chief Justice is yet to grant a nod.
R SIVAKUMAR @Chennai

A division bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and V Lakshminarayanan initiated the suo motu petition following a request made by R Varalakshmi, praying for the court to take cognizance of the matter, given the gravity of the crime, that too occurred in the campus of the premier institute for technology.

Subsequently, the bench directed the home secretary, the DGP and the university to respond to the petition.

However, when the court reassembled for the post-lunch session, the judges said they would take up the matter after getting the nod from the Chief Justice, who was not in town.
