The rescue of 55 children took place between Byndoor in Udupi district and Thokur in Dakshina Kannada district from January 1, 2021 to till date this year.In the year 2021, two boys and 10 girls were rescued.In 2022, 20 boys and two girls were rescued.The following year saw 19 rescue operations which include nine boys and 10 girls.In 2024, so far one girl and one boy have been rescued by the RPF staff.Sources from RPF told TNSE that in most of the cases, these vulnerable runaway children were rescued when the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) found them as ticketless travellers.When they were questioned, they would reveal their plight and reveal the reason behind their running away from home.TTE would inform the RPF and RPF take those children to their safe custody.Then, the child is handed over to the district Child Welfare Committee.Madhusudhan PV, RPF Inspector, Udupi said that RPF staff have been at the forefront in rescuing vulnerable children.This exercise also aims at stopping the trafficking of children."Sometimes the children were rescued during the train journey and at other times they were also rescued from station platforms when they would be helplessly waiting."
